Santwana Thukral, Operations Manager

Roche Molecular Systems

Before joining the BIRS program, I spent 15 years in the biotech and diagnostic industries. My work has always centered around ensuring operational excellence and maintaining regulatory compliance in high-stakes environments. One of the most rewarding experiences of my career was during the COVID-19 pandemic, where I led the qualification of a filling and labeling line for SARS-CoV-2 test kits. It was deeply meaningful to contribute directly to global health efforts. Prior to my time in biotech, I served as a commissioned officer in the Indian Army, where I developed the discipline, resilience, and leadership skills that continue to shape my professional and personal life.

I discovered the BIRS program through professional networking and personal research. At that time, I was looking to bridge my technical expertise with a deeper understanding of regulatory science. Purdue’s strong reputation and the program’s emphasis on innovation and real-world applications made it an ideal fit for my career goals. The program provided the perfect opportunity to expand my knowledge and have a more significant impact in the biotech field.

The hybrid format of the BIRS program was a game-changer for me. The flexibility allowed me to balance my career, family responsibilities, and academic pursuits without feeling overwhelmed. There were many late nights and moments when I had to juggle priorities. But the flexibility of the program, along with the support I received from Purdue’s professors, peers, and advisors, made it manageable.

The real-world industry interactions—seminars, live sessions, and symposiums with industry leaders—offered insights far beyond what could be learned from textbooks alone. A highlight was the directed project, which gave me the chance to apply what I was learning directly to my current role. This made the experience incredibly relevant and impactful, providing immediate value to my work.

If you're considering the BIRS program, my advice is to fully embrace the challenge. It’s not just about earning a degree—it’s about expanding your knowledge, stepping up as a leader, and building a network of inspiring professionals. The knowledge, skills, and relationships you gain will continue to benefit you long after graduation.

For me, the BIRS program has been a transformative experience. It deepened my understanding of regulatory science and provided the practical tools I needed to make a broader impact on public health and the biotech industry. The knowledge I’ve gained and the relationships I’ve built will always hold a special place in my heart, and I’m excited to apply these insights to drive positive change in the field. The experience taught me that stepping out of my comfort zone is where true growth happens, both personally and professionally.
